Cinco de Mayo is just one of those holidays we feel duty-bound to celebrate. We’re serving up (non-alcoholic) margaritas, having a dance party with our DIY maracas and giving the pinata our best shot. Hope you and your family are sharing in some fun fiesta togetherness today!

Cinco de Mayo is almost here! No matter what your background is, Cinco de Mayo is a great day to celebrate Mexican heritage and traditions (and also a perfect excuse for good food and lots of Mexican-themed fun!) Looking for ways to celebrate with the kids? Check out our ultra-simple, fun Cinco de Mayo craft ideas below!
Make Your Own Maracas
You will need:
Empty drink bottles with screw on caps (washed and thoroughly dried)
Red, white and green tissue paper or washi tape
Craft glue
Dried beans or lentils
Instructions:
Decorate the outside of the bottles with tissue paper or tape (in the colors of the Mexican flag, of course!)
Fill bottle halfway with lentils or beans.
Replace lid (screw tightly) and allow decorations to dry.
Shake away!
Decorate Sombreros
You will need:
Kid-sized sombreros (we love these)
Sequins, glitter glue, sticker jewels, feathers
Craft glue
Newspaper
Instructions
Protect your work area with lots of newspaper.
Give each child a sombrero and an assortment of decorations.
Let everyone create something unique and fabulous!
When you’re done, try a quick freeze-dance style (and G-rated!) Mexican Hat Dance. Play some Mexican-themed music, and have everyone form a circle around their new sombreros. When the music stops, everybody freezes! Last one to freeze takes their sombrero out of the circle and gets to dance on the sidelines for the next round.
Cinco de Mayo Paper Chains
You will need:
Green, red and white construction paper, cut into two inch strips
Craft glue
Instructions
Curl a strip into a circle and glue the ends together with a one-inch overlap.
Alternating colors, weave the next strip through the first paper “link” and repeat above.
When your chain is long enough, use as garlands to make the house or backyard look awesome for you Cinco de Mayo fiesta!
